‘If elected, I will serve for only one term’: Martha Karua declares 2027 presidential bid

Opposition luminaries have vowed to remain united and unshaken ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The principals, led by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DCP’s Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa, DP’s Justin Muturi and PLP’s Martha Karua, sounded a stern warning to other opposition members against deviating from the unity call.

The leaders, who were speaking in Nairobi at Ufungamano House during the PLP’s National Delegates Conference, said remaining together will ease the task of dislodging President William Ruto from power in 2027.

The PLP party leader formally declared her bid for the 2027 presidential contest, promising to serve for one term if elected.

“If elected president, I will serve for only one term. Kidole kimoja hakivunji chawa…we will field one opposition candidate,” said Karua.

The leaders called out President Ruto for presiding over an unfriendly regime with unrealistic policies that have hurt the country since he ascended to power in 2022.

The opposition leaders pledged to remain united and field one presidential candidate against President Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

"A time is coming when we will make a sacrifice…tutahakikisha one term has happened na Ruto arudi Sugoi," said Wamalwa.

Gachagua added, “We shall make whatever sacrifices necessary ... I am willing to sacrifice and support you the way I did for Ruto.”

“We are a government in waiting, Martha. We are proud of you,” Kalonzo noted.

They also alleged that there is a plot to divide the opposition ahead of the 2027 poll.

Gachagua said, "There is a deliberate plot to scatter us ... you will start seeing it."

Muturi on his part stated, "Us being here is a testament we are together ... ukiona mmoja wetu akiteleza jua huyo ni msaliti."

The PLP National Delegates Conference resolved to ratify the party structure by creating three deputy party leader positions as well as establishing a 16-member shadow cabinet that will provide proactive policy alternatives.
