I am most suited to be President - Martha Karua

Speaking in Mwea on Sunday, Karua held that the need to have a woman at the helm of the nation has come of age and she is best fit for the job.

The presidential hopeful cited her track record as Minister for Water and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Mwai Kibaki government, saying that Kenya needs a leader with integrity.

"This time, allow a woman to be President of Kenya and divide the national cake, and I am the most suited for the job. This is the time for the Kenyan cake to be shared by a woman, none other than Martha Wangari Karua," she said.

She added that she is willing to work with like-minded people, and that the national cake should be shared only among astute leaders with the nation's interests at heart.

The PLP boss has previously ruled out taking up the position of deputy president under the United Opposition coalition, maintaining she will either vie for the presidency or support whoever is selected as the coalition's flag bearer.

Speaking on Citizen TV's The Explainer on July 21, Karua said she would respect the coalition's agreed-upon selection process and back the candidate chosen, provided the process is conducted in accordance with the rules set by the alliance.

"I will support the one who is chosen in accordance with the rules we have set. The only thing I will not do is be a running mate. That one I say. I've no wish to be a running mate. I did a good run with Raila Odinga. That's just about enough. But it's all or nothing," she said.

Karua's decision now places her co-principals in the  United Opposition, among them Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, Jubilee's Fred Matiang'i, Former Chief Justice David Maraga, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from Linda Mwananchi, at a nail-biting conundrum on finding their flagbearers.
