More than 600 residents of Nairobi's Riruta area benefited from a free medical, dental, and optical camp organised by First Assurance Kenya in partnership with GEM Smiles Foundation, Maria Immaculata Hospital, and Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital.
The one-day camp aimed to expand access to basic healthcare for underserved
communities while reinforcing First Assurance’s commitment to social impact
beyond its core insurance business.
First Assurance said 620 people received
medical screenings and consultations during the camp, which included tests for
blood pressure and blood sugar.
Additionally, 150 dental procedures were
performed, including 66 extractions and 84 full-mouth cleanings, while another
68 individuals received oral health consultations and education.
First Assurance Chief Operating Officer Dr.
Johannes Kitaka said the initiative was part of broader efforts to bridge
healthcare gaps through collaboration.
“SHA is here ensuring those who are not
registered are registered, and in case of serious cases requiring referrals,
they can use SHA to access better facilities,” he said.
The company's head of marketing, Jesca
Karegua, said their focus was on demonstrating care beyond premiums.
“This partnership is key because we want to
show that we are not just an insurance company focused on premiums, but a
caring partner. This is one of the most impactful ways to reach low-income
communities by providing direct access to healthcare,” she said.
Common conditions treated during the camp
included dental caries, gingivitis, chronic periodontitis, halitosis, and
plaque build-up.
A few complex cases, such as buccal
swelling and aggressive periodontitis, were referred for further treatment.
Organisers recommended strengthening
referral pathways and ensuring sufficient pharmacy and medication support for
future initiatives.
