Hundreds of traders in the Roysambu and Kasarani areas along the Thika Superhighway are counting losses worth millions of shillings after the government, through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), demolished their kiosks and shops overnight.

The traders said government bulldozers flattened their businesses, leaving them stranded and without a source of livelihood.

"Nilikuwa nafanya biashara ya kuuza manguo, hawa watu wa KeNHA hawakuwa wametupatia notice, tulikuwa tunangoja wakuje watupatie notice ndip tuweze kujipanga," a trader said.

The demolitions come barely two weeks after similar operations in Githurai 45, where the government said it was planning to build a parking yard in the area.

"Tumeenda hasara kubwa sana wametwambia tu saa nane ya usiku kwamba wameanza kubomoa nyumba, watu walikuwa wamelala, tumepigiwa simu tukaambiwa tutoe vitu tuko na 25 minutes," Alex Muturi, a trader, said.
