Gov't declares May 27 public holiday to mark Eid ul-Adha

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026 a public holiday to mark Eid ul-Adha.
In a notice published in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated May 25, 2026, Murkomen said the holiday is declared under Section 3(1) of the Public Holidays Act.
Eid ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, a test of faith that, according to Islamic tradition, ended with God providing a ram as a substitute.
The holiday coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah and is marked by special congregational prayers, charitable giving, and family gatherings.
Many Muslim families also perform the sacrificial slaughter of an animal, with the meat shared among relatives, neighbours and the less fortunate.
