Siaya Governor James Orengo has underscored the need for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to negotiate a formal and structured engagement with President William Ruto as the party navigates its place within the emerging broad-based government.

Speaking during a fundraising event at St. Luke’s ACK Church, Okoyo Ywaya Parish in Alego Usonga constituency, Orengo warned that without a clearly defined arrangement, ODM risks being sidelined—particularly in the absence of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who for decades served as the party’s central unifying figure.

Orengo argued that a binding agreement is essential to protect ODM members currently serving in government from potential marginalization or frustration.

He cautioned party members who have recently been vocal in their praise of President Ruto, noting that without a structured framework, their positions could easily be rendered vulnerable.

The governor singled out what he described as “ODM-donated experts,” urging them to remain aware that their continued service depends entirely on the goodwill of the president, who can dismiss them at any time.

Orengo also rejected claims that the Luo community is only now gaining meaningful access to government. He termed the narrative “dishonest,” citing the community’s past political achievements, including producing Kenya’s first Vice President and the country’s second Prime Minister—positions he said carried immense national influence.

He further urged ODM to remain vigilant to avoid being overshadowed by President Ruto’s UDA party, pointing to other political outfits such as ANC, which he said had lost their identity after aligning with the government.
