A bodyguard of Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata was shot in the chest during a tour by Linda Mwananchi in Nyandarua and Laikipia counties on Sunday.

The governor shared a picture of the driver he identified as Gitari, saying he was shot during the tour.

“Today, we were first stoned by goons while we were at the AIPCA church, and my driver was injured after being shot in the chest by the police. It is so unfortunate. We came in peace, but what we got in return was being stoned,” Kang’ata said in a press conference.

According to the governor, the bullet is lodged in Gitari’s chest.

"We are yet to ascertain whether it is a live bullet or a rubber bullet. He is completely immobilised," Kang'ata told the press on Sunday.

Narrating the ordeal, Kang’ata said his car was blocked and confiscated by goons in Laikipia.

The events follow political tension in the region ahead of the Ol Kalou by-election happening on Thursday next week.
