Government reinstates four chiefs sacked over deadly Kirinyaga brew

Government has reinstated chiefs and assistant chiefs in Kirinyaga County who had been interdicted following the death of 17 people after consuming illegal alcohol in February 2024.

Speaking during County Mashujaa day celebrations at in Mwea, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Hallosow said the officials were reinstated after the government finalised investigating them.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua gave an order to sack the administrators on February 17, 2024, during the burial service of 17 people who died after consuming deadly alcohol in Kangai.

The four administrators were interdicted and Police officers at Kiamaciri station in Mwea West Sub- County arrested. Then, residents criticized the move, saying the officials were a scapegoat for failure in broader enforcement.

The administrators interdicted on Gachagua 's order were Weston Muthike of Mutithi location, Jeremiah Muriithi of Kathiga location and assistant chiefs Peter Nyaga of Kianjogu sub-location and Samuel Kiarie of Kariko-ini sub-location.

Kirinyaga County commissioner said Chief Muriithi, who was interdicted months to his retirement will be paid his dues.

During the Mashujaa day celebration in Rurii Primary school ground, Mutithi location chief Weston Muthike was celebrated as he was introduced to the public with a full government uniform.
