A heated exchange between Gor Mahia
head coach Charles Akonnor and Mathare United’s John Kamau marred the end of an
otherwise thrilling FKF Premier League clash at the Kasarani Stadium on
Thursday, where Gor Mahia claimed a 2–0 victory.
The altercation occurred moments
after the final whistle following what appeared to be a misunderstanding over
post-match greetings between the two tacticians.
Speaking after the match, Akonnor said
the incident was the result of a minor misunderstanding that escalated
unnecessarily.
“It was about greetings. He tried to
approach me, but I was unavailable at the time. Maybe he wasn’t happy, but it
was nothing serious,” Akonnor explained. “As coaches, we should respect each
other regardless of the match outcome.”
In response, Kamau downplayed the
incident, insisting there was no bad blood between the two.
“If you don’t greet me after the game, I won’t do the same. It’s that simple. But I don’t take it to be a personal thing,” Kamau said, noting that the issue was about mutual respect and principle rather than disrespect.
Despite the off-pitch tension, Gor
Mahia produced a dominant performance on the field, securing a comfortable win
that keeps them firmly in the title race.
The victory lifted K’Ogalo to second
place on the league table with 12 points, just one point behind leaders
Kakamega Homeboyz, who sit top with 13 points.
Mathare United, meanwhile, remain in
eighth position with seven points after six matches.
As the league season progresses, fans
will be hoping both teams shift focus back to football rather than sideline
drama. Maintaining respect and sportsmanship between coaches, many believe,
will set the right example for players and supporters alike.
