Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has hailed his side’s
composure, tactical discipline, and squad depth after their 2-0 victory over
defending champions Kenya Police FC - a result that not only lifted K’Ogalo’s
to the top of the FKF Premier League table on 16 points with a game in hand,
but also marked their first win over Police in two years.
In a match that showcased Gor’s growing confidence and
cohesion, Akonnor’s men controlled the tempo from start to finish, displaying
patience and precision in their play. The coach revealed that their measured
approach was part of the team’s strategy right from kick-off, emphasizing
control over urgency.
“We knew Kenya Police are strong defensively and dangerous
on long balls, so we had to stay calm and trust our plan,” Akonnor said after
the game. “The boys kept their discipline, didn’t rush to score, and waited for
the right moments to attack.”
The Ghanaian tactician reserved special praise for
20-year-old left-back Brighton Onyona, who continues to impress ahead of an anticipated
Harambee Stars bow.
Akonnor described
Onyona’s performance as “composed and confident”, noting his balance between
solid defending and forward runs that stretched the opposition.
Also earning plaudits was Musa Sharriff, whose creativity
and vision in midfield orchestrated much of Gor Mahia’s attacking rhythm ending
up to score the second goal. His link-up play and ability to dictate tempo were
instrumental in maintaining control and guiding the team to victory.
“It means a lot for us, players like Brighton showed
incredible maturity, and Musa brought the creativity and calmness that kept us
ticking,” Akonnor added. “It’s encouraging to see this level of depth in the
squad; it gives us belief that we can compete consistently going forward.”
