Global clean energy experts convene at Oxford to advance research partnerships

Researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and clean-energy innovators have converged at the University of Oxford for a symposium aimed at strengthening international partnerships to accelerate clean-energy research and expand access to affordable and reliable power.

The Ayrton-Oxford Academic Symposium, being held on Monday, brings together experts from the UK, Africa, Asia and other regions to examine how stronger research collaborations can help countries address energy access, climate change and economic development challenges.

The meeting is supported by the UK Government’s Ayrton Fund and convened by the Africa-Oxford Initiative (AfOx), the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Transforming Energy Access Learning Partnership (TEA-LP) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

Organisers say the symposium will focus on strengthening links between universities, researchers, governments, investors and industry so that scientific research can be translated into practical and scalable clean-energy solutions.

The initiative comes as countries seek to accelerate their energy transitions while improving energy security and supporting economic growth.

According to figures presented by the organisers, Ayrton-supported innovations have so far improved access to clean energy for about 46 million people in emerging economies, while programmes supported through the fund have leveraged more than £3 billion in public and private financing and contributed to more than 256,000 green jobs.

The wider Ayrton network spans 100 countries and includes 78 universities and more than 840 researchers, innovators and delivery partners. Its collaborations have also produced 191 technology patent applications and contributed to more than 2,400 research papers.

Professor Sir John Edmunds, Chief Scientific Adviser at the FCDO, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address, highlighting the role of international research partnerships in supporting energy transitions and strengthening institutional capacity.

A major focus of the symposium is the role of universities and researchers in developing solutions suited to local energy needs, particularly in developing economies.

Through the TEA-LP programme, more than 30 universities across Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands are involved in efforts to strengthen clean-energy research capacity and train the next generation of energy professionals.

The TEA@SUNRISE network, meanwhile, connects more than 400 members across 40 countries and 80 universities in the UK, Africa and Asia to support research and development of clean-energy technologies.

Other programmes supported through the Ayrton Fund include the Faraday Institution's work on energy storage and battery research, the Climate Compatible Growth programme, Energy Catalyst and ZE-Gen.

The initiatives cover areas ranging from renewable energy and energy storage to agriculture, healthcare, education and transport.

Caroline Ward, Senior International Funds Manager at UKRI, said the symposium provides an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between universities, innovators, funders and policymakers.

She said stronger partnerships could help attract investment and speed up the development of clean-energy technologies while supporting economic growth and climate resilience.

Africa's role in the emerging energy transition was also highlighted at the meeting.

Professor Kevin Marsh, Director of the Africa Oxford Initiative, said African researchers would be central to developing responses to challenges such as energy access and green transitions.

He said translating research into impact would require closer collaboration between researchers, innovators and investors.

Jiska de Groot, Project Lead at TEA-LP, said equitable partnerships should allow researchers in Africa, Asia and the Indo-Pacific to lead research agendas that respond to local needs and strengthen energy expertise within their own institutions.

The symposium also features experiences from participating universities, including Nigeria's Usmanu Danfodiyo University, where TEA-LP support has contributed to changes in its MSc Renewable Energy programme.

Professor Misbahu Ladan Mohammed said the partnership had enabled the university to introduce practical courses focused on local energy solutions and off-grid communities, helping students bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world applications.

The discussions at Oxford are expected to underline the growing importance of locally led research and international cooperation in developing clean-energy solutions that can be deployed at scale.


The organisers say the long-term goal is to strengthen the institutions, skills and partnerships needed to support a more inclusive and sustainable global energy transition.
