Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested four suspects and seized counterfeit currency with a face value of Ksh.4.378 million in an intelligence-led operation in Makueni County.

The crackdown began in Kambu Township, where detectives from Mtito Andei Police Station arrested Sophia Adhiambo, 57, and Michael Gitau, 59, after they were found in possession of Ksh.4 million in counterfeit Ksh.1,000 notes.

The detectives subsequently extended the operation to Mtito Andei Township, where they intercepted a HOWO truck, registration number KDX 614H/ZH 8450, transporting fertiliser from Mombasa to Naivasha.

A search of the truck uncovered an additional Ksh.378,000 in counterfeit Ksh.1,000 notes concealed inside, bringing the total value of the recovered fake currency to Ksh.4.378 million.

The two occupants of the truck, Robert Tonde, 52, and Stephen Musila, 42, were arrested.

The four suspects are being held at Mtito Andei Police Station as detectives pursue further investigations into the source and intended destination of the counterfeit currency and establish whether other individuals are linked to the syndicate.

The recovered currency and other exhibits have been secured at the police station as investigations continue ahead of the suspects’ arraignment in court.
