Former Chesumei MP and Boston Marathon champion Elijah Lagat dies

Former Member of Parliament for Emgwen and Chesumei constituencies and renowned marathoner, Elijah Kiptarbei Lagat, has passed away.
Lagat died on Tuesday morning while receiving treatment at
Eldoret Hospital. Until his death, he was serving as a board member at the National
Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA).
Born on June 19, 1966, Lagat first entered Parliament
in 2007, representing Emgwen Constituency on an ODM ticket.
Following the subdivision of that constituency, he was
re-elected in 2013 as the first MP for the newly created Chesumei
Constituency under the Jubilee Party.
During his time in Parliament,
Lagat held various leadership positions, including vice chairperson of the
Labour and Social Welfare Committee, chairperson of the Sports Subcommittee,
and vice chairperson of the Health Services Committee.
He also served as Deputy Human Resource Manager in
the Nandi County Government for five years.
Outside politics, Lagat was a distinguished athlete. He is
best remembered for winning the 104th Boston Marathon in the United
States in 2000 and for representing Kenya in several international
competitions.
Nandi Deputy Governor Yulita Cheruiyot is among the
leaders who have sent condolences to his family.
“I extend my condolences to Lagat’s family, friends, and all
Chesumei Constituency residents, whom he served. May God comfort them,” Dr
Cheruiyot said.
