Justice Kihara served as Kenya's Attorney General from February 2018 to October 2022, becoming the country's seventh holder of the office.
Before he was appointed Attorney General, he served as President of the Court of Appeal between 2012 and 2018, having previously held several positions within the Judiciary.
According to the Office of the Attorney General, Kihara also served as Director of the Judiciary Training Institute, a judge of the High Court and Principal and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya School of Law.
During his tenure at the Court of Appeal, he contributed to the development of institutional frameworks for the court, including the Court of Appeal Bill and its strategic plan.
Kihara holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
He was sworn in as Attorney General in April 2018 after his nomination by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, succeeding Professor Githu Muigai.
In a condolence message on Tuesday, Koome described Kihara as an accomplished jurist, an exemplary judicial leader, and a dedicated public servant whose contribution to Kenya’s legal institutions will remain part of the country’s history.
Koome further extended her sympathies to Kihara's family, friends, colleagues and those who worked with him during his career in public service.
