KCB Rugby Club were on Saturday crowned Challenger Cup champions after outclassing varsity side Strathmore Leos 47–12 in an entertaining fixture played at the Impala Club.
The bankers made their intentions clear from the onset,
scoring quick tries and maintaining dominance throughout the first half. By
halftime, KCB held a 26–12 lead over the university side, which struggled to
keep up despite fielding some of its key players.
The 10-time Kenya Cup champions resumed the second half with
renewed intensity, as Dominic Sande sliced through the Leos’ defence to score
his first try of the game. Brian Wahinya added the conversion, extending KCB’s
lead to 31–12.
Moments later, Tyson Maina capitalized on an excellent scrum
deep in the Leos’ territory to add another try, with Stephen ‘Zola’ Osumba
slotting in the extras for a 40–12 advantage.
In the dying minutes, Strathmore’s Amon Wamalwa attempted to
breach KCB’s solid defence, but Davis Nyaundi stood firm to deny him. The
bankers then sealed the victory with a final try and successful conversion,
wrapping up the match 47–12 in favour of the Ruaraka outfit.
Speaking after the game, team captain Vincent Onyala
expressed pride in the squad’s performance: “We are pleased with the team we
are building at KCB. Everyone is showing great character and hunger to succeed.
If we continue with this momentum, we believe we can reclaim the Kenya Cup, a
trophy that has eluded us for a while.”
With the Challenger Cup triumph now in the bag, KCB RC turns
its attention to the 2025/2026 Kenya Cup season, which kicks off on November
22, 2025. The bankers will open their campaign against Impala RFC in an
afternoon fixture at the KCB Sports Club, Ruaraka.
