Flag Football scores big as more Kenyan schools sign up

Flag football has received a major boost in Kenya after 100 schools expressed interest in the sport following a showcase at Thika High School during the just concluded KPJSSA games.

The Kenya American Football Federation (KFAF), in partnership with the Kenya Primary Junior School Sports Association (KPJSSA), staged demonstrations featuring Farasi Lane Primary School and Green Edgewood Academy.

The showcase featured U13 mixed gender, U15 boys, and U15 girls categories, attracting learners, teachers, and parents who witnessed the fast-paced sport for the first time.

Farasi Lane won the U13 mixed contest 19-6, while Green Edgewood claimed the U15 boys match 6-0. The U15 girls' encounter ended in a goalless draw.

Farasi Lane were crowned the inaugural KPJSSA Flag Football overall champion.

KFAF President George Alwanga hailed the showcase as an important step in introducing the Olympic sport to Kenyan schools.

“Today is the moment these young learners next to us will showcase why schools should embrace this Olympic sport,” Alwanga told Citizen Digital.

The biggest highlight, however, came from the registration drive. A total of 71 teachers representing all eight regions registered their schools on the day, with referrals later pushing the figure to 100 schools.

The Ministry of Education welcomed the initiative, with Directorate of Field Coordination and Co-Curricular Activities official Nelson Sifuna saying the ministry would review the demonstration report before communicating the way forward.

KFAF is now targeting a structured inter-school competition framework in 2027, with regional competitions potentially leading to a national championship.
