Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has joined the rest of Kenyans and the entire world in mourning the sudden demise of the former Prime Minister and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Amolo Odinga.

FKF president Hussein Mohammed paid his tribute to the late former premier as a towering political figure but also a devoted patron of Kenyan football.

The FKF boss reflected on his first encounter with Raila during the 2007 general elections campaigns.

“I was not only a fan of his leadership but also I had the privilege of playing recreational football with him during the 2007 campaigns.”

Hussein said Raila leaves behind a legacy rich in dedication, advocacy, and an unparalleled love for both his country and the sport he cherished.

“Kenya has lost a great leader who was an ardent fan of sports and its development in our country,” he said.

The FKF president reflected on Odinga’s unwavering commitment to nurturing talent and advocating for better structures to support sports at the grassroots.

“We have lost one of the most courageous leaders, not only in the sports fraternity but also the entire country.”

He actively supported local football clubs, particularly record FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia, where he served as a dedicated patron.

Just before his passing, he generously contributed Ksh 10 million to Gor Mahia to assist with the club’s logistical needs ahead of the new season.

Furthermore, his political party, (ODM, organized a 20th-anniversary tournament in Mombasa, which Gor Mahia won.

“We’ve lost a fan and father of our beloved Gor Mahia. If it were not for Raila's efforts Gor Mahia would not be where we are today. These sponsorship deals we’ve been getting are some of his efforts and blessings,” said Gor chairman Ambrose Rachier.
