A family in Kagio town, Kirinyaga County, is in anguish after their daughter, a Form Three student, went missing under unclear circumstances more than two weeks ago.

According to her mother, Joyce Wambui, her daughter Ann Nyakio, a student at Facing Mt Kenya Secondary School in Kerugoya, disappeared on December 21, 2025.

Wambui said the family has been desperately searching for Nyakio since the day she vanished. She explained that relatives had visited their home on December 21, and Nyakio went to see them off but never returned.

“My brother and his family were visiting us that day. She went to escort them, but from that day, she never came back,” Wambui said.

The family’s distress deepened three days later when Nyakio’s elder sister received a phone call from a man who claimed to be from Gaturuturu village in Nyeri County. The man allegedly told her to come and pick up her sister.

“After receiving the call, we immediately reported the matter at Kagio Police Station. The officers acted quickly and coordinated with detectives in Nyeri County,” Wambui said.

The family later travelled to Nyeri, but the man reportedly told them that although he had been with Nyakio, he could no longer trace her whereabouts. He was arrested, taken to court, and later released on bond.

“We do not know whether the man was telling the truth or if he harmed my daughter,” Wambui said tearfully.

Wambui added that she had already bought all the school items Nyakio needed to return to school after the Christmas holidays.

Nyakio was last seen in Kagio town wearing black trousers, a black 3D T-shirt, and black Crocs. Despite ongoing efforts by the family and police, her whereabouts remain unknown.

“Police in Kagio have tried their best, but our search has been fruitless so far. I just want my beautiful girl back and to see her return to school,” Wambui said, breaking down in tears.
