Three weeks after his disappearance and a week after his body was found at Nairobi Funeral Home, the family of Derrick Omanga Tom, a digital marketing manager and former intern at Royal Media Services, is demanding the arrest of the people who last interacted with him before his death.
Derrick’s body was found near the Roysambu roundabout on
December 6 at around 2 am, after an evening of merrymaking in the company of
two people.
The three were captured on CCTV footage at a liquor store
along Ngong Road.
The CCTV footage from Wine Tails along Ngong Road captures
Derrick Omanga’s last moments on December 5, the day he went missing. At 10:37
pm, Derrick is seen going upstairs while holding a woman's hand, as another man
wearing a cap follows them closely.
In the second clip, he staggers and supports himself on a woman outside the entrance of a liquor store. Once inside, he engages the seller
to hand over his bag, which he appears to have left behind.
She opens the door and hands over the bag to Derrick’s friend. He insists on checking the bag first before leaving. The woman obliges, and Derrick takes the bag to ensure everything is intact.
Meanwhile, the man in
a cap is seen filling a cup with a drink and handing it over to the woman.
The three then leave, this time with the man in a cap
leading the way. He is followed by the woman, who is carrying Derrick’s bag, and
Derrick, who appears tipsy. The man in a cap is again seen giving the woman a
drink in a cup.
This was the last time the digital marketing manager at a
tour and travel agency was captured alive.
Reports indicate that the party later moved to a club along
Thika Road, where the woman excused herself after reportedly feeling unwell and
went home.
She allegedly left Derrick in the company of the man in a
cap, who is said to have joined them along Ngong Road while the two were
partying.
“Inakuaje wewe mtu amekununulia vinywaji kutoka saa kumi na
mbili mpaka saa nne usiku, amekulipia bill zote, alafu unaweza enda umwache na
mtu hujui kama umesense danger? Kwa nini hungeenda na ule ulikuwa naye?”
Derrick’s father Josephat Omanga said.
Three hours later, Derrick’s lifeless body was discovered
near Roysambu roundabout.
Police who moved the body to Nairobi Funeral Home indicated
that the 25-year-old was an accident victim, a narrative the family rejects.
“Nilikua huko tarehe tisa sikumpata. Imekuwaje tena
amepatikana tarehe sita? Nimerudi huko mara tatu nikienda city na sikuwa
nampata, na sikuwa naenda peke yangu,” Margaret Omanga, Derrick’s mother
lamented.
A postmortem examination revealed the cause of death as
multiple injuries due to blunt force trauma. However, the report did not
conclusively state whether the injuries resulted from an accident or a human
attack.
“Human rights, LSK tusaidie tupate haki, kwa sababu ya
unyonge hatupelekwi vile inastahili. Tangu mtoto apatikane, hao watu wangekuwa
arrested,” his father added.
Kasarani Sub-county Criminal Investigations boss Aloyce Mboya says officers have recorded statements from three friends who last interacted with the deceased. Detectives have also summoned more people who were in communication with Derrick before he died.
