A family in Nakhwana Muende village, Bungoma county, spent last night in the cold after their house was set ablaze by unknown people.

Village elder Dinah Kisiang’anyi said she heard noises at the said homestead around 8pm last night – and rushed to the scene.

“I arrived at the scene and found people gathered and shouting. The house was already on fire,” said Kisiang’anyi.

“It is quite unfortunate that the family of Isaac Kutondo has suffered such a loss due to disagreements among neighbours,” she said -- hinting that the fire may have been started by a neighbour.

Speaking for the affected family, Everlyne Kutondo said they could not recognize the suspects as it was dark.

“What I can say is that a group of unknown people broke into our house at night, started destroying things before setting the house on fire,” said Kutondo.

She said that some of her family members fled in the darkness – and were yet to return.

The police are investigating the incident.
