Kenyan international Esse Akida has made an active return to football inking a deal with Kenyan Women’s Premier League (KWPL), side Kibera Soccer Women FC.
Akida,
who is one of Kenya's most celebrated female footballers, expressed her
anticipation and emotional fulfilment in rejoining Kenyan women football. She
was a former member of the MTG United FC based in Kilifi, played for Spedag Ladies
and Thika United before going international. She revealed that the decision
comes after trying period of balancing her father’s health and her professional
career.
“My dream has always been to play football
until I can’t play anymore. After a tough period juggling between the health of
my old man and my career, I feel I’m in a good mental space to continue again,”
Akida said in her statement.
Her move
to Kibera Soccer Women FC marks an emblematic homecoming, as she reunites with
Coach George Robert Okello; a mentor who she says has played an imperative role
in her football journey and understands her style of play. Akida noted that
this connection made her decision even “more special”.
"I’m really happy to join Kibera Soccer
Women FC and to be back playing in the Kenyan Women’s Premier League. This is
more special because I'm reuniting with Coach George Robert Okello, someone who
has played a big role in my football journey,” she remarked.
Beyond
her personal comeback, Akida also views this as a chance to inspire a new
generation of young female footballers who dream of making a career in the
sport.
"This is another chance to show them that
with hard work and belief, anything is possible," she said.
The forward,
who has also turned out for Turkish side Besiktas, and Israeli club FC Ramat
HaSharon, is eager to don Kibera’s colours once again, and give her all, to
both the team and the fans that have supported her over the years.
Akida’s
return is a major boost for women’s football in Kenya, bringing back
experience, leadership, and inspiration to the local game.
