Equity handball team head coach Peter Mwathi says they will not underrate General Service Unit (GSU) when the two sides clash in a highly anticipated league match at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

Equity will be looking to extend their dominance against the para-military side, but Mwathi remains cautious but confident ahead of the clash.

The last season’s league runners up will be leaving nothing to chance as they aim to give another shot at the title this season and GSU will be Mwathi’s first real test this season.

“GSU is a good side and we cannot afford to underrate them in any way. We have prepared well for the clash and we are confident we will get the maximum two points,” said Mwathi.

“They are a team that plays a fast pace game so will be looking to counter by trying to slow and control the game. We have to be cautious not to get caught out on turnovers,” Mwathi added.

The experienced tactician admitted that he still has to sharpen his defence and make it difficult for GSU to create inroads.

“We still have to correct a few things on our defence because we have conceded many chances in our previous matches. We have to make sure the GSU’s line player doesn’t get the ball frequently to attack and that will give us an edge.”

And after being close to the league title two times consecutively, the 57-year old is also looking to change his approach of not only imposing the best defence but also scoring more goals.

“We have always been known for possessing the best defence in the league since I came to Equity but we have not been scoring enough and that has always haunted us in the end. We have to start creating as many chances as possible and be ruthless in converting them to win the title,” Mwathi said.

A win against GSU will give them an edge in the title race considering that the paramilitary side pauses as a potential title challenger.

Both sides are unbeaten in the league so far with GSU sitting fourth on the log with six points after three matches while Equity have four points from the two matches they have played.
