Kenya’s journey toward sustainable food security is increasingly defined by the need to balance innovation with safety, and progress with public trust.

As the country faces challenges such as climate change, population growth, and pressure on agricultural systems, it is essential to engage in open, factual, and science-based discussions on emerging technologies, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Biotechnology continues to play an expanding role in modern agriculture globally. In Kenya, its application is guided by a robust regulatory framework under the National Biosafety Authority, which ensures that all approved GMO products meet stringent safety standards for human and animal health, as well as the environment.

The Authority undertakes rigorous, transparent, and science-based assessments, incorporating expert risk evaluations and multi-stakeholder input before any approvals are granted. This ensures that safety is not assumed but carefully verified.

At the same time, popular attitudes of GMOs remain divided, as is to be expected with technologies that connect science, livelihoods, and societal values.

This highlights the National Biosafety Authority's crucial function as both a regulator and a source of accurate and reliable information.

The Authority seeks to ensure that conversations around GMOs are based on confirmed, science-based facts rather than speculation or misinformation through ongoing public awareness campaigns, stakeholder participation, and open communication.

Kenyans deserve access to clear, objective, and evidence-based information. Such access empowers farmers, consumers, and policymakers alike to make informed decisions.

The goal is not to direct choices, but to ensure that every Kenyan has the knowledge needed to confidently evaluate available options.

For farmers in particular, the stakes are high. Agriculture remains the backbone of Kenya’s economy and the primary source of livelihood for many households.

Technologies that can enhance productivity, improve resilience to pests and climate stress, and reduce production costs merit careful consideration. In this context, GMOs can be viewed as one of several tools available to support agricultural development and food security, complementing, rather than replacing, conventional and indigenous farming practices.

Equally important is the need for transparency and continuous engagement. The National Biosafety Authority remains committed to fostering open dialogue with stakeholders, including farmers, researchers, civil society, and the general public, to build confidence and ensure that regulatory decisions are inclusive and aligned with national priorities.

As Kenya continues to chart its path forward, strengthening public trust in regulatory systems and promoting informed, science-based discourse will be key.

By ensuring that only safe GMO products are approved, and by making accurate information accessible to all, the Authority plays a central role in supporting both public confidence and national food security goals.

Ultimately, the strength of any decision lies in the quality of information behind it. When Kenyans are well informed, they are better equipped to make choices that support their health, protect the environment, and secure the country’s future.

The Authority affirms to Kenyans that it has the necessary legal, regulatory and institutional capacity to ensure and assure safety of GMOs and their derived products.
