Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has castigated opposition leaders who are sowing seeds of division, hatred and tribalism, saying that will erode the gains made in uniting and developing the country.
Speaking
on Friday in Othaya Constituency in Nyeri County during the Economic
Empowerment Engagement for SACCOS and micro and small businesses, the DP urged
the political class to emulate the humility and selflessness portrayed by
Kenya's third President Mwai Kibaki.
“Leadership
is about service delivery, that is the school of politics that the late Kibaki
taught us. The people of Meru County really liked the late Kibaki. He was a
good man, a polished leader who taught us good politics; that a leader is
judged by his service to his people. Not those selling empty rhetoric and chest
thumping but service to the people,” emphasized Prof. Kindiki.
The
late President hailed from Othaya and led between 2002 and 2013.
Prof.
Kindiki assured the residents of Nyeri that the Ruto administration is
developing all the regions equitably and they will not be left behind.
He
noted that the residents of Nyeri have benefitted greatly from reduction of
fertilizer prices from as high as Ksh.7,000 a bag to only Ksh.2,500 consistently
over the last three years.
“Farmers
are fetching more from coffee, tea and milk sales compared to the corresponding
prices that were prevailing in 2022 when the current administration assumed
office,” said Prof. Kindiki.
The
Deputy President highlighted some of the mega development projects that Nyeri
County is set to benefit from government including the construction of key
roads that have been revived, revamping of Ruring'u Stadium and the Mwai Kibaki
Othaya Stadium.
He
said the government is investing heavily in key projects worth over Ksh.16
billion in fresh produce markets, affordable housing projects, institutional
housing and student accommodation for tertiary institutions across the county.
“We
were here in April with the President where he made several promises and I am
elated that some of those projects including the construction of Mwai Kibaki
Stadium in Othaya, the largest fresh produce modern market worth Ksh.328
million among others are underway,” he said.
The
government has also invested Ksh.847 million to connect 10,600 new households
and institutions with power across Nyeri County. Of this allocation, Ksh.92
million is for Othaya Constituency to connect an additional 1000 households.
The
Deputy President also called on the residents of Nyeri to register with the
universal medical Insurance, saying 460,000 residents out of the target
population of 760,000 in the County have enrolled for the Social Health Authority
(SHA) cover.
Present
were Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga and MPs Wambugu Wainaina (Othaya), Duncan
Mathenge (Nyeri Town), Wainaina Chieni (Kieni), Eric Wamumbi
(Mathira), Patrick Munene (Chuka Igambang’ombe), John Bwire, (Taveta), Sabina Chege (Nominated) and
Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira.
