A  report released by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)  has revealed widespread bribery in Kenya’s private sector, with medical professionals and teachers among the top recipients of illicit payments.

According to the Kenya National Gender and Corruption Survey, 2025, doctors received the highest average bribe at Ksh.5,164, followed closely by teachers at Ksh.5,020 and nurses at Ksh.3,366.

Employees in insurance companies and banks recorded lower but still significant averages of KES 2,351 and KES 2,222, respectively.

The findings, referenced in proceedings, highlight systemic corruption cutting across essential service sectors, raising concern over the integrity of healthcare, education, and financial services.

The survey further shows that bribery remains heavily cash based, with 72.2 per cent of payments made in cash.

Money transfers accounted for 10.5 per cent, while other forms, such as food, drinks, valuables, animals, or exchange of services, were minimal, each contributing less than 3 per cent.

Data tabled also points out gender disparities in bribery patterns, with slight variations observed between male and female respondents across different private sector categories.

The report is expected to inform ongoing legal and policy discussions on corruption, as stakeholders push for stricter enforcement and accountability mechanisms in both public and private institutions.
