Kenya’s Zetech University got off to a false start after suffering a 75–61 against Burundi’s Les Hippos in their Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) Group B opener, staged at the Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium on Monday.

The Burundian side set the tempo early, edging Zetech 15–14 in a tight first quarter before establishing a 35–24 lead at the break.

Their efficiency in ball movement and synergy proved crucial in their opening day win as Zetech struggled to convert clear scoring opportunities.

Les Hippos’ standout duo, Diedhiou Laurence Sabin and Nicole Collins, were influential in the first half as Collins and Judith Hamel continued controlling possession and sinking key baskets that kept their side ahead throughout the game.

Their composure and pace on transition created continuous problems for Zetech’s defensive line that struggled to keep up with their impeccable hassle play.

Zetech attempted to turn the tide in the second half, substituting players and increasing their attacking intensity.

However, the Burundians’ defensive discipline helped them finish the third quarter leading 59–39.

Zetech's Roseline Ooko and Ashley Minayo made notable dunks to try to change the tide for the team, but Les Hippos held firm to claim the 75–61 victory.

Speaking after the match, Zetech University head coach Maurice Obilo attributed the slow start to stage fright and nervousness on the big stage, especially for players making their WBLA debut.

“We began the game slow and with a little stage fright. Some of our key players are also carrying injuries.” Obilo stated.

Zetech guard Mary Lisa echoed his sentiments, noting that the experience will serve as a learning curve.

“This is the first time at this level for some of us. We need to regroup and catch up quickly,” she said.

Zetech will now shift focus to their next game against Group B fixture against Rwanda's REG BBC on November 12 at the Nyayo Gymnasium, where they will seek to bounce back and keep their campaign alive.
