National Super
League (NSL) newbies Kibera
Soccer coach Iddi Shikanda has targeted an ambition top five finish in their
maiden appearance in the second-tier league in the 2026-27 season, underlining
the side’s fearless approach to their latest challenge.
Kibera Soccer secured promotion to the
NSL for the first time after making five consecutive attempts to achieve the
feat.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Shikanda cited
team chemistry as a crucial catalyst in the quest for promotion to the NSL.
"What made it easy for me is that
these players have played together for so many years.
“What I did
was to introduce the winning mentality, treating each game as a final, ensuring
that we win all our home games. " The tactician said.
Having achieved their immediate
objective, Shikanda says Kibera Soccer are now setting their sights even higher
as they prepare for their maiden NSL campaign.
The coach has challenged his players
to compete for a place among the league's top five while also harboring
ambitions of going all the way and lifting the NSL title.
"The dream of every coach is to
win the league they participate in. In 2009, Sofapaka came from the NSL and
went straight to winning the Kenyan Premier League.
“Our target
is to finish among the top five teams, if not winning the NSL this
season." He added.
Despite their ambitious targets,
Kibera Soccer has opted for a relatively conservative approach in the transfer
market.
The club has brought in only a handful
of new players, with Shikanda placing greater faith in the squad that delivered
promotion last season.
The coach believes maintaining the
core of the successful team will help preserve the understanding and chemistry
that proved instrumental in their promotion campaign.
Kibera Soccer will therefore head into
their first NSL season with continuity at the heart of their strategy, hoping
the same group that finally achieved promotion can now establish the club among
the country's leading second-tier sides.
