Two Somali minors who were captured stepping on the Kenyan flag at Nyayo Stadium during a match have been presented in court.

The minors aged 14 and 17 years face charges of being in the country illegally, damaging a national symbol of unity — the Kenyan flag — and causing disturbance.

However, they did not take a plea after Senior Resident Magistrate Rose Gitau ordered that they be taken to the Gigiri Children’s Protection Unit. The magistrate further directed that a social inquiry report be filed in court before the minors can answer to the charges.

Relatives of the two had requested their release into their custody, but the court declined on the grounds that they were not biological parents.

The minors are expected back in court next week on Wednesday for further proceedings.
