Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General
Collins Oyuu has declared his intention to defend his seat in next year’s
national elections, brushing off talk that his predecessor Wilson Sossion may
challenge him.
Speaking after meeting
representatives from 25 KNUT branches across the Rift Valley, Oyuu said he is
fully prepared for any competitor, pointing to what he described as a solid
record of stability, unity, and progress for teachers.
He emphasised that under his leadership, the union has
strengthened its cohesion and boosted efforts to support teachers’ welfare.
While addressing the gathering,
Oyuu insisted that he had not travelled to the region to campaign, noting
instead that support from the Rift Valley branches was their own independent
decision.
He praised the national office’s work, saying, “I can even say without blinking that the achievement of
this leadership is seen all over. They have been very strategic in approaching
issues, very calm and calculative.”
He stressed that the union
operates as a collective, not a one-man show, reminding members that there is
“no solo operation, individual praises,” adding that he would never take
personal credit, because “the union has done this… we have done this… and we
have succeeded together.”
According to him, the trust from members is so evident that
doubting their support would be “a culture of doubting the obvious.”
Oyuu declared that he and his
team were already more than prepared for the upcoming contest.
“We are more than ready, in fact we are ready
like yesterday… Every Tom, Dick and Harry who would wish to come to the arena,
come baby come, we shall face it… Come for your immediate downfall,” he said.
The Rift Valley branches endorsed
him unanimously, commending his calm negotiations with the Teachers Service
Commission (TSC) and his strengthened advocacy for teachers nationwide.
West Pokot Executive Secretary
Etary Sembelio Martin affirmed the region’s support, saying the Rift Valley had
resolved to stand firmly behind Oyuu and his team.
He warned against anything that might disrupt the peace
currently enjoyed and urged teachers to re-elect the current officials.
