The 7th edition of the Cleo Malalah Super Cup has turned a
historic page, officially introducing rugby to the tournament for the first
time.
Stakeholders say the move is set to boost talent development
in Western Kenya while creating a model for nurturing athletes nationally.
The inaugural Rugby 7s kicks off on December 30 at the Bull
Ring (Lions Grounds) in Kakamega and runs through December 31.
Sponsored by a coalition of former Kenya Rugby stars, the
event features 15 teams competing across four pools for a total prize pool of Ksh.550,000,
with Ksh.300,000 for the winners, Ksh.150,000 for runners-up, and Ksh.100,000
for third place, courtesy of sponsors.
The sponsors will also provide playing equipment,
officiating support, and technical expertise for the inaugural edition.
Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding,
veteran former national rugby team, Shujaa, captain Brian Malenya said the
decision to introduce rugby followed extensive consultations with stakeholders
and ex-players.
“There have been extensive consultations and the
incorporation of former rugby players in this process. The dominance of Kabras
RFC in this county also played a big role in the decision to support and grow
rugby talent in the Western region,” Malenya said.
He added that the inclusion of rugby as the second sport in
the 7th edition of the Cleo Malalah Super Cup was a deliberate effort
to create structured pathways for young players beyond football.
Tournament patron and former Kakamega Senator Cleophas
Malala welcomed the support from veteran players, emphasizing the long-term
commitment to nurturing youth talent.
“We do not take this support for granted. The contribution
in terms of balls, officiating fees, prize money, and technical support will go
a long way in nurturing talent,” Malala said.
He emphasized that the signed memorandum would translate
into tangible benefits for young athletes.
“This partnership will not be in vain. It is a long-term
commitment towards supporting and growing talent,” he added.
With Kabras RFC’s influence and a growing rugby culture in the region, stakeholders believe the inclusion of the sport not only elevates the Super Cup’s profile but also positions Western Kenya as a national hub for rugby development.
