China
has strongly condemned the United States over a proposed arms sales package to
Taiwan reportedly worth about $11 billion, describing the move as a serious
violation of the one-China principle and a threat to regional stability.
Speaking
on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun denounced the planned arms
sale as “a dangerous act,” saying it undermines the political foundations of
China–US relations.
Beijing
said the sale breaches the one-China principle and the three China–US joint
communiqués, which it described as solemn commitments made by Washington and
the bedrock of bilateral ties.
According
to China, the move infringes on its sovereignty, security and territorial
integrity, erodes mutual trust between the two countries, and heightens
tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
The
government warned that arming Taiwan sends the wrong signal to “Taiwan
independence” forces and emboldens separatist tendencies that threaten peace
and stability in the region.
Beijing
accused the Lai Ching-te authorities of pursuing “independence” through
military buildup, arguing that increased arms purchases waste public funds and
endanger the future of the island.
It
said transforming Taiwan into a heavily armed outpost would not enhance its
security, but instead raise the risk of confrontation and military conflict.
China
maintained that weapons sales cannot change what it described as the
fundamental trajectory of the Taiwan question, warning that attempts to resist
reunification by force would inevitably fail and only accelerate tensions.
It
also cautioned that those in Taiwan who rely on external support risk being
used as pawns in broader geopolitical competition.
The
Foreign Ministry further said the US strategy of using Taiwan to contain China
would ultimately backfire, damaging China–US relations and undermining regional
peace and stability, to the detriment of Washington’s own interests.
Reaffirming
its position, Beijing said the Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s core
interests and represents a red line in China–US relations.
It
warned that China’s resolve and capacity to safeguard national sovereignty and
territorial integrity should not be underestimated.
China
urged the United States to honor the one-China principle, abide by the three
joint communiqués, and act on commitments made during head-of-state talks.
It called for an immediate halt to arms sales to Taiwan, warning that it would take resolute measures to defend its sovereignty and security, and placing responsibility for de-escalation on Washington.
