Residents of Nairobi have welcomed the ongoing road repair works in a number of wards across the capital. Many say that the ongoing works will improve connectivity and ease pedestrian and vehicular flow in the area.

So far a number of estate roads have undergone renovations; improving their surfaces using cabro blocks.

Speaking to Wananchi Reporting, James Karanja, a resident of Roysambu, said the ongoing roadworks had significantly improved the status of the estates, business areas, and other surroundings.

According to Nairobi County Ward Development Programme (WDP) CEO, Eng. Eston Kimathi, the county is committed to ensuring Nairobi has the best infrastructure.

“In Ziwani Kariokor Ward, the Gikomba/Hardware Road is being upgraded to ease access to one of the city's busiest open-air markets, directly benefiting traders and ease the movement of goods,” said Eng. Kimathi.

“In Pangani Ward, works on Nico Bar Crescent and Wanjas Lane will improve connectivity and ease pedestrian and vehicular flow in the area.”

“Further north, in Kasarani Ward, the upgrade of SDA Chieko Road will improve access to the residential area of Chieko and the adjacent local institutions.

“In Zimmerman Ward, two critical roads, Kiarunda and Village Inn Roads, are undergoing rehabilitation to boost accessibility in the high-density Roysambu Sub County,” noted Eng. Kimathi.

Residents told Wananchi Reporting that the ongoing road works would ease movement of people and goods.

“In the past, pedestrians would have to worry about dust and mud especially during rains, but now all that will be a thing of the past. The roads and the lanes will serve pedestrians, traders and motorists well,” said Jane Kawira, a trader in Gikomba.

According to Engineer Kimathi, the developments are a demonstration of Nairobi County's commitment to improve road network across various wards.

“We have to carry out regular inspections visits to do oversight, track progress, verify quality, evaluate the impact the roads are having on the lives of the people, and ensure good work is done for the people of Nairobi.”

“The county government, under the leadership of Governor Johnson Sakaja is building roads to improve last mile connectivity and improve access to markets and schools,” said Kimathi while touring Starehe, Kasarani, and Roysambu sub counties, where roads are being rehabilitated to serve densely populated residential and commercial areas.
