Kenya’s transition to clean energy has received a boost following an investment by French development finance institution Proparco in the Kipeto Wind Farm, the country’s second-largest wind power facility.
Located in Kajiado County, about 70 kilometres south of Nairobi, the 100 MW Kipeto Wind Farm has been operational since July 2021 under a long-term power purchase agreement with the national utility. The plant generates around 432 GWh of electricity annually, supplying clean power to the national grid and serving approximately 250,000 households—equivalent to over half a million beneficiaries.
The project is a co-investment with Meridiam Infrastructure Africa Fund II (MIAF II), in which Proparco is an investor. The partnership reflects growing French support for Kenya’s goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity and universal energy access by 2030.
According to French Ambassador to Kenya Arnaud Suquet the investment underscores France’s role as a long-standing partner in Kenya’s energy transition.
“By supporting the country’s second-largest wind power plant, France reaffirms its commitment to Kenya’s renewable energy ambitions. The partnership between Proparco and Meridiam demonstrates what sustainable collaboration can deliver—reliable, clean, and affordable power with tangible benefits for local communities.”
Jean Guyonnet-Dupérat, Proparco’s Regional Director for East Africa, said the investment aligns with the institution’s mandate to promote low-carbon growth and inclusive development.
“Kipeto provides dependable, affordable clean power while avoiding over 250,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. It also supports jobs and contributes to community projects, in full alignment with Kenya’s climate and social development goals.”
Thierry Déau, Founder and CEO of Meridiam, welcomed the new partnership.
“We’re delighted to strengthen our collaboration with Proparco through Kipeto. Together, we’ve supported transformative projects across Africa in clean energy, transport, and digital access—initiatives that advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals and build resilience across the continent.”
Beyond clean energy generation, the Kipeto Wind Farm has created more than 500 direct and indirect jobs and contributes annually to a community development trust supporting education, healthcare, and infrastructure among surrounding Maasai communities. The project also implements an advanced biodiversity action plan with conservation efforts in the local ecosystem.
Kipeto’s proximity to Nairobi enhances grid stability for Kenya’s largest demand centre, making it a key pillar in the country’s renewable energy landscape.
