Drivers have been urged to exercise maximum caution during the upcoming festive season to curb the rising number of road accidents across the country.

Speaking during the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims, NTSA Director Paul Posh warned that any road user found violating traffic rules will be subjected to mandatory re-examination.

He noted that this directive will apply particularly to truck and public service vehicle drivers.

“Any road user found faulting road usage will undergo mandatory re-examination, especially truck drivers,” Posh said. “Once investigations or cases are concluded, the affected drivers will be required to be re-tested to determine their suitability on the road and to ensure they are updated on the new traffic regulations.”

He added that enforcement officers have been placed on high alert, and any offender caught flouting road rules will face legal action.

“We are cautioning all drivers against breaking traffic rules. The law will take its course on anyone found endangering lives,” he emphasized.

Current estimates indicate that more than 4,000 people have lost their lives in road accidents this year.

The government aims to reduce this number by 50 percent by 2030 in line with global road-safety commitments.

Stakeholders have also raised concerns over the high number of crashes involving boda boda operators, who are said to contribute to more than 70 percent of reported accidents.

They are calling on riders to exercise greater responsibility on the roads to help reduce the alarming statistics.
