The Boxing Federation of Kenya Secretary General David Munuhe says the heightened competitiveness witnessed in this year’s National Boxing League is clear proof that the sport is on an upward trajectory — backing the standards to continue to rise.

Munuhe spoke after record Kenyan champions Kenya Police were crowned the 2025 National Boxing League winners at the season finale held over the weekend in Kisumu. Popularly known as Chafua Chafua, the Police team were favourites from the start and lived up to expectations, maintaining their grip on the title from the opening leg.

“The league was very good and ran smoothly without any hitches. As a federation, we are happy, and we congratulate every team that participated. We urge them to carry the same morale and spirit into next year, and we also hope that more counties will join the league,” said Munuhe.

‘Chafua Chafua’ sealed the championship in style, winning the final leg by six points. They amassed 30 points in Kisumu, ahead of KDF’s 24, to finish the league on an unassailable 110 points.

KDF’s hopes of retaining the title were dealt a blow early in the season when they failed to honour the opening leg in Busia — a setback that lingered throughout their campaign.

National team captain and Africa Boxing Championships light-middleweight champion, Boniface Mogunde of Kenya Police, was named the 2025 Best Male Boxer, while Amina Martha secured the Best Female Boxer award.

In the ring, KDF’s Dennis Muthama clinched the national bantamweight (54kg) title after overcoming stiff competition from policeman Shaffi Bakari, who was ruled out of the semifinals by medical officials.

Nairobi County finished third overall with 37 points, followed by former champions Kenya Prisons with 28, and Nakuru County with 25.

Rounding out the top ten were: Nakuru Amateur Boxing Club (24), Kibra (21), Kisumu (20), Laikipia (12), and Githurai 44 (9).

Other teams included Mombasa (7), Busia (4), Kongowea (4), Kiambu (3), and Vihiga (2). Mbaraki, Havana, Molo, Kwale, and Siaya collected one point each, while Trans Nzoia and Kajiado ended the campaign without a point.
