The woes bedeviling Naivasha Member of Parliament Jayne Kihara
have gone a notch higher after auctioneers on Thursday raided her home and
carted away family livestock and a personal car.
The auctioneers, who were backed by armed police, took away
one of her personal cars and 127 goats and sheep belonging to her son over a
2007 election petition pitting her against former Naivasha MP John Mututho.
The raid came incidentally hours after the outspoken MP
accused President William Ruto and his cronies of grabbing part of Kenya
Railways land in Naivasha and constructing a mall.
Following the Thursday morning raid, Nakuru MCAs and local
leaders moved in to console and back the MP who has fallen out with the
government.
According to Kihara, the raid was ill-motivated and meant to
intimidate her for backing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, adding
that she would not be cowed.
“The OCS had called me saying that he was under pressure to
implement an order by the auctioneers and I told him that I should be present
when it was carried out,” she said.
An emotional Kihara said that there was a pending petition at
the Court of Appeal, adding that she was in darkness as to how her opponent
obtained a court order.
“All the goats and sheep taken belong to my son as I do not
have any livestock and the hired youths stole some of the livestock during the
raid,” she said.
Naivasha East MCA Stanly Karanja hit out at Mututho over his
actions, which he termed illegal and a curse in the Kikuyu community.
“There is nowhere in our custom where you auction livestock,
and this will be a curse to those behind this inhumane action that is meant to
humiliate our MP,” he noted.
This was echoed by his Lakeview counterpart, Alex Mbugua, who
wondered how the auctioneers got a court order, yet there was a pending case in
court.
“This is another sign of impunity by the government and we
shall stand with our MP as this government continues to antagonize her,” he
pointed out.
Others who spoke were Molo town MCA Joseph Ngware who called
on the MP to soldier on despite alleged intimidations by State organs.
The latest incident comes barely a month after anti-riot
police stormed the same home and stopped a meeting that the MP had called on
‘security grounds.’
At the time, Kihara livestreamed the entire incident as she
was ushered into one of the vehicles and driven to Naivasha Police Station. She
was later released on a bond of Ksh.50,000.
