Kenyan tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi has set her sights on
a top 100 world ranking following her latest victory at the ITF World Tour
Nairobi W35.
The 21-year-old, currently ranked 476 globally, secured the second-leg
singles title on Sunday after defeating Italian fourth seed Martina Colmegna in
straight sets.
The win was a rematch of their first-leg semi-final the
previous weekend, which Okutoyi also won.
“My aim was always to be in the top 400. Last year, that was
the key for me to quality for Paris 2024. I am able to crack that. I am also
aiming to even move up (the rankings) to the top 100,” said Okutoyi, who is
also a Wimbledon junior doubles champion.
Okutoyi’s remarkable form during the Nairobi series has been
boosted by her recent Olympic Solidarity scholarship, awarded by the National
Olympic Committee of Kenya.
Tennis Kenya President Wanjiru Mbugua praised her
performance and emphasized the importance of organizing high-level tournaments
to nurture talent.
“We are so happy to have held this tournament. because we
want outcomes like the one Angela has given us. It is every administrator’s
dream to have a player like that crowned champion,” Mbugua said.
Okutoyi’s rise signals a bright future for Kenyan tennis, as
she continues to combine international exposure with domestic dominance.
Her progress also highlights the growing support
infrastructure for elite players in Kenya, from scholarships to competitive
tournaments on home soil.
