Workers constructing the government’s affordable housing units
in Kidiwa, Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, held protests on Wednesday accusing the
contractor of delaying their salaries.
The workers say they have not been paid for two months, with
many unable to buy basic necessities including food.
The construction workers warned that they will continue their
protests and disrupt daily activities until their demands are met.
The housing project has also stalled as the workers are kept
at bay, a development that has sparked public outrage and widespread
complaints.
“We were being paid half salaries, and we have not been paid
since July this year. They keep telling us to come back tomorrow,” said Joab
Otieno, a construction worker in Kidiwa.
“We want the government to summon the contractor and find out
where the problem is because we are here suffering, and yet we are being asked
to pay rent,” Joseph Simiyu, another worker, stated.
“I am a parent, and my family depends on me. Right now, my
house has been locked, and I’m wondering when tomorrow will ever come,” said
Calistus Sabai, a construction worker in Kidiwa.
