The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group and NBA Africa have trained 100 Kenyan physical education teachers and educators on disability-inclusive basketball coaching as part of efforts to expand access to sport for children of all abilities.

The training was held at Fam Sports Arena Basketball Court in Kitengela during the Basketball Experience Disability Inclusion (BE-DI) Teachers’ Awareness Day, focusing on equipping educators with practical skills to make basketball accessible to children with disabilities.

The programme forms part of the broader Basketball Experience initiative, a collaboration between AFD and NBA Africa that uses sport to promote education, life skills and inclusive opportunities for young people.

Participants received practical training on the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA curriculum through classroom sessions and on-court activities, covering basketball fundamentals, safe coaching practices and age-appropriate instruction.

A key component of the training was disability inclusion, with educators introduced to adaptive coaching techniques, accessible activities and inclusive curriculum design to enable children with disabilities to participate meaningfully in basketball.

The initiative seeks to address barriers that limit participation in sport and create environments where children of different abilities can learn and play together.

The training was delivered in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross, whose life skills component highlighted the role of sport in developing teamwork, resilience, leadership, health awareness and social responsibility.

Through the programme, the organisers aim to strengthen the capacity of teachers to accommodate diverse learning needs and promote inclusive sporting environments in which children can develop both on and off the court.

The initiative places inclusion at the centre of youth sports development, using basketball as a platform to support learning, social interaction and personal growth among young people.
