A 21-year-old suspect, recently arrested by police during a botched armed robbery in Kisumu, has taken his own life inside the Kisumu Central Police Station cells.

Kelvin Oduor, alias Kevo, reportedly hanged himself using a string resembling a belt inside the cell bathroom.

According to a police report, officers on duty noticed that he was missing during the 6 a.m. roll call. They then checked the toilet and found that the suspect had died by suicide.

The deceased had been arrested on Monday over a robbery with violence offence and was placed in police custody for 14 days pending another court date.

DCI scene-of-crime officers processed the scene and took his body to the Kisumu County Hospital mortuary.

While armed with an AK-47 rifle, the deceased had engaged officers in a fierce shootout along Otieno Oyoo Street before being subdued and arrested.
