Eleven suspects, nine foreigners and two locals, have been arrested in a government-led crackdown on illegal mining operations in Migori and Siaya counties.

In Siaya County, two foreigners were arrested in the Yamo-Oloko area of Bondo Sub-County by a team comprising officers from the Mining Police Unit and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In the operation ordered by Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho the officers also seized three sealed cartons of gelignite explosives weighing 25 kilograms each, 72 individual explosive charges, and 137 pieces of shock tubes. The case of the two suspects is set for mention on December 22.

In Migori County, a separate raid at Awovinar Property Ltd led to the arrest of seven foreigners and two locals who were found conducting mining activities without valid licenses, in violation of Section 202(1) of the Mining Act, Cap 306.

The seven foreigners have since been deported, while legal proceedings against the two locals who have been released on bond are ongoing.

Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai, speaking after the arrests, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stamping out illegal mining across the country.

“The gloves are off. We’re taking decisive action against illegal mining, and we won’t stop until the law is upheld. No individual or organization will be above the law. Anyone found engaging in illicit mining activities will face the full force of the law, regardless of their status or influence,” said PS Kimtai.

He further emphasized that while mining is a legitimate economic activity, it must be conducted in accordance with the law and under the requisite licenses and permits to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

The PS added that County Mining Officers have been deployed nationwide to streamline operations in the sector and ensure mining contributes effectively to Kenya’s economic growth.
